Lovely hand carved and painted Scottish terrier standing in grass in this Essex crystal ring. Since the breed became popular in the 1800's, the Scottish terrier has become a popular subject of artists.
The domed cabochon of rock quartz is expertly carved on the reverse flat side and then painted with amazing detail. The inside is often backed with foil or mother of pearl to give it that unique 3D effect. This one appears to be backed with pink mother of pearl and gives off lovely flashes of pink as the ring moves in the light. Essex crystal rings were popular throughout the 1800's and this is from the Victorian period. It's not a conversion which is quite rare as most seem to be conversions.
In good antique condition. The rock quartz does show wear but nothing I would consider outside of normal for such an old ring. It certainly doesn't detract from this amazing piece of art. Please judge for yourself from the photos.
Tests as 15ct gold, size 6.25 and weighs 6.9 grams. The bezel is rose gold while the rest of the ring is yellow gold. Face measures 17mm wide.

Most of our pieces are vintage or antique and therefore are not in perfect condition. Please keep this in mind when purchasing. It should be expected that these pieces will have normal wear and tear according to their age. This could include patina, scuffs on the gold, slightly loose but secure stones and light scratches on the stones. We try our best to accurately depict everything through detailed photos and will point out any flaws we feel are noteworthy. Please review the photos carefully and reach out to us with any questions.
